Piotr Twaits spoke to Matthew about his sporting ambitions and explored the parallels between achieving success in both sport and business.
PT: What does the England Community Lions tour of Australia mean to you?
MS: Representing my country in a sport I love is one of the best experiences I’ll ever have in my life.
1. PT: What qualities do you think are essential for success in Rugby League at an international level?
MS: It’s all about doing the 1-percenters correctly, every single time. What I mean is the fundamental aspects of improving yourself incrementally every day and adding value to yourself and the team environment. If you can embody those traits, that’s how you progress into the top 5%.
2. PT: How do those skills benefit you in your day-to-day job?
MS: Some of the things I was taught as a young child by two fantastic coaches are values I still live by today. Things like punctuality, showing respect to others, and knowing how to communicate effectively.
3. PT: How does the support from the team around you help you?
MS: Everyone plays a role in achieving that final result. While I’ve worked hard to get to where I am, there’s no way I would have achieved it without my teammates. No matter how much you want to progress as an individual, you can’t do it without a team. Just like in business, teams consist of people from different backgrounds and walks of life. When you share a common goal, it doesn’t matter what else is happening in your life. This is the task – we want to win. Everyone is striving for the same thing.
4. PT: How do you balance a full-time job with an amateur sporting career?
MS: It takes a huge amount of commitment and sacrifice. It often means sacrificing time with my family in the evenings and at weekends. But I wouldn’t be the person I am if I didn’t play.
5. PT: What would be your top piece of advice for someone starting their journey to achieve their dream, whether it’s playing for England or starting their own business?
MS: Enjoy the process! Everyone has a big end goal, and they think they know what it will feel like when they get there. But people often forget about the journey and making sure they enjoy it. That means enjoying the tougher moments, your development and all the little milestones that eventually lead you to your larger goal.
